Contra Costa Times: Big game, noisy venue will put Cal to the test

'Business-as-usual' approach used by Tedford also was a staple of the legendary Waldorf

With a rocking Neyland Stadium as the backdrop, No. 9-ranked Cal embarks today on what it hopes will be the start of a magical season. The Golden Bears will line up for the 2:30 p.m. (PDT) kickoff in front of nearly 110,000 people, and will be trying to block out their cheers along with the blaring of the Tennessee state song, "Rocky Top." It should be a scene that will be locked into the players' memories forever, except for the regular lectures from coach Jeff Tedford that they have to treat the game like any other business trip. Former Cal quarterback Paul Larson, an All-American in 1954, remembers similar lectures in his day. Larson was coached by Pappy Waldorf, who was in charge the last time Cal was known as one of college football's elite teams. Like Tedford, Waldorf took a "business as usual" stance before big games.
