• Not long after Jeff Tedford arrived at Cal, the Bears were the No. 2 power in the Pac-10, behind Pete Carroll's USC Trojans. They were the only team to beat USC in 2003. Last season Cal outplayed but did not beat USC. As USC seeks a third consecutive national title, it is again Cal, ranked No. 2 in Pac-10 preseason polls, that could be the Trojans' biggest obstacle. That game is Nov. 12. Cal running back Marshawn Lynch, expected to be a big star, was No. 2 to J.J. Arrington last year.
