There are thousands of college football games played each year by hundreds of teams.
Each game is defined by a series of plays. Some memorable. Others not so much. Only one game is defined by “The Play.” Stanford at Cal. Memorial Stadium. November 20, 1982.The stakes were far higher than your everyday bragging rights. The winner received an invitation to the Hall of Fame Bowl and possession of “The Axe,” given annually to the Cal-Stanford football game winner. 1955 Hart graduate Joe Kapp was the Golden Bears head coach. The man Sports Illustrated once dubbed “The Toughest Chicano” stood stunned as Stanford quarterback John Elway marched his team down field far enough to set up a 35-yard field goal by Cardinal kicker Mark Harmon. Stanford 20, Cal 19. All but four seconds had evaporated off the game clock. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
