Cal starts practice to prepare for 2005 opener.

BERKELEY - California opened training camp for the 2005 season when head coach Jeff Tedford welcomed the Golden Bears for their opening practice sessions Monday. The freshman went through a brief workout in the morning, with the veterans taking to the turf in the afternoon.
The first combined practice will be Tuesday afternoon, and the sessions will continue until the season-opener Sept. 3 vs. Sacramento State in Memorial Stadium. Practices are closed to the public.
"We've got a great young group," Tedford said after the morning session. "There is a lot of skill on the field, and we're anxious to coach them and see how they progress."
The freshmen practiced for about 90 minutes, reviewing many of the drills they will need to know before joining the veterans.
"We just try to acclimate them to the organization of practice, so when they practice with everyone, they have a feeling (of the drill) and get what the drill is about," Tedford said. "We went through 1-2 reps in drills."
The Bears are ranked 20th in the preseason USA Today Top 25 poll and have been picked to finish second in the Pacific-10 Conference, behind USC. Cal is coming off a 10-2 season in 2004, posting its highest win total in 13 years.
