Release Date: 8/26/2005
SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- The Sacramento State offense scored three touchdowns and added three field goals and the defense picked up two turnovers in the final scrimmage of training camp on Friday morning at Hornet Stadium.
The two-hour scrimmage featured all five quarterbacks for the Hornets. Senior Brad Tredway marched the team down the field on the opening drive but was intercepted by junior linebacker Tony DeMonico at the 9-yard line. Senior Chris Hurd, junior Tim Bessolo and sophomore Crosby Wehr all went three-and-out during their debut before Wehr hooked up with Phillip Perry for a 48-yard score down the right sideline.
Junior Chris Cavender was stopped on a three-and-out during his first drive but moved the team into scoring range where freshman Juan Gamboa converted a 43-yard field goal on the ensuing possession.
Hurd returned under center and on 2nd-and-25 dumped a middle screen to Kris Daniels who broke a tackle and dashed into the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown.
Gamboa made a 27-yard field goal and the next drive before the defense recovered a fumbled snap exchange for its second turnover of the game.
The final segment of the scrimmage placed the ball inside the 10-yard line. The offense found the end zone on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line when Daniels rushed through the right side. The defense, however, responded by stopping the offense on the next two series on fourth down. The last drive was a two-minute drill which was capped by a 36-yard field goal from Gamboa.
Sacramento State will return to its normal practice schedule next week as the team prepares to face No. 19 California on Sept. 3. The Hornets will have Monday off and then practice from 3:20-5:30 on Tuesday-Thursday.
