I think Maisel's comment is pretty fair. I remember Mondays in which only a few people in the class knew there was a game over the weekend.
Actually, this was not a preseason ranking. It was a draft of which 40 programs that three ESPN writers would choose if they were allowed to reduce FBS field from 120 teams to 40. I think Mark Schlabach has the most recent preseason rankings on ESPN, and he has Cal at 13 as of May 15.
