After the first week of football practice, California redshirt sophomore John Tyndall is excited. Every year seems to be called "the year" Cal breaks through and wins the Pac-10. Tyndall and the rest of the Bears are leaving nothing to chance this time around. “We're working hard, looking and looking forward to the next couple weeks," Tyndall, the former Pacific Grove High School standout, said.
After winning Scout Team Player of The Year honors his first season in Berkeley, the 6-3 Tyndall has sights on being the first team fullback. The Bears' schedule opens with Maryland coming West on Sept. 5, a game that has special meaning for Tyndall since he missed the last one. Tyndall hurt his foot in the second game against Washington State and had to miss last year's trip to College Park where the Bears lost 35-27. Tyndall played mostly on special teams last season with a single carry on offense.

A little more to it than that. A lot more. About $8-10 million more. By Texas leapfrogging Cal and going to the Rose Bowl, Texas got a $10-12 million payout, compared to a $2 million payout for the bowl they would have gone to. By conference agreement, that money is split among all the teams in Texas' conference, or about a million per team. Guess how many coaches in the Texas SW conference vote in the BCS poll? 5, including Brown. Guess how many coaches changed their vote from Cal to Texas in the final poll? 4. Yep.
And the votes, at that time, were, confidential.
