St. Paul Pioneer Press: Minnesota turns focus to stiffer test against Cal

Minnesota didn't appear preoccupied during its 44-0 victory Thursday night at Kent State. It might have been an illusion. "I think we're prepared for Cal," tailback Alex Daniels said after the game, without being asked. "We'll just take it one day at a time and get ready for the game."
The Gophers will have a few extra days to prepare for ninth-ranked California, which starts its season this afternoon at No. 23 Tennessee. That's probably a good thing; Minnesota might have made mincemeat out of Kent State, but the Bears will pose an entirely different challenge.
Kent State was 1-10 last season, an also-ran in the middling Mid-American Conference. Cal is aiming to win a national title, and some college football observers believe they will do it.
