Sports Network: Gophers and Bears tangle in Big Ten/Pac-10 matchup

The Big Ten meets the Pac-10 as the Minnesota Golden Gophers head west to battle the 22nd-ranked California Golden Bears. Glen Mason's Gophers kicked off the 2006 season in dominating fashion, blanking Kent State on the road, 44-0. It was an impressive effort by a Minnesota squad that had questions prior to the start of the campaign, but Mason knows his guys are in for a much tougher go this time around as it faces a Cal club that was stymied in its season opener, falling at No. 23 Tennessee, 35-18. Minnesota has won 17 straight regular season non-conference games, the longest active streak in the Big Ten. As for head coach Jeff Tedford's Golden Bears, they lost control of their game against the Volunteers early, falling behind 35-0. Still, there is plenty of time for a turnaround and it begins with this home tilt against the Gophers. Minnesota and California have met four times previously, but the last matchup took place nearly two decades ago with the Golden Gophers winning at home, 32-23. The last time the two met in Berkeley was in October of 1964 when Minnesota prevailed, 26-20.
