Oakland Tribune: Bears trashed on and off field in Tennessee

Nashville columnist needles Cal; Vols intercepted signals

BERKELEYCal took a beating Saturday night, and the beating continued into Monday in The Tennessean, Nashville's newspaper.  Cal's Top-10 ranking before its 35-18 drubbing by Tennessee was called "fraudulent" Sunday in The Tennessean. Then its sports columnist, David Climer, shoveled more dirt on the corpse in Monday's paper.  "Granted, this sure looked like old times on Rocky Top," Climer wrote, "but Cal arrived as the most overrated team since Ben Affleck and J-Lo. For (Vols quarterback) Erik Ainge, this was fish-in-the-barrel target practice against Cal's step-slow defense."  Cal's defense isn't slow. Quite the opposite. It simply was manhandled and embarrassed in Knoxville. But its pass defense continues to be a problem because of weak coverage, i.e., the big play. Cal missed Tim Mixon's experience, and there were three new starters in the secondary.
