Knoxville Update

Note from Blog editor: I just arrived in Knoxville this morning via redeye from SFO. The weather is overcast, but it is neither hot nor humid. It feels like Sacramento. There is a large contingent of Cal fans, and there is a bowl-like atmosphere here.
I will be visiting the stadium this afternoon and will hopefully post some photos. I'll also post photos of tonight's Cal Alumni bash, tomorrow's tailgating festivities, and live shots from the game.
Go Bears.

From the U.S. Consensus:

Tennessee
Education -
completed 6th grade - 74%
completed middle school - 44%
completed High School - 12%
completed >1 yr. of College - 1%

This is not a great place to call home.

Anonymous,

I'm almost as proud and rabid a Californian as I am a Cal alum/fan. And in today's national political climate, I certainly look upon all the "red states" with a bit of bemusement and perhaps even condemnation. But Tennessee is a fine state and home to many, many fine people--even an odd Democrat or two--and there is absolutely no need to question their intelligence or educational achievement. First, the UT is an excellent university, not some mere football factory like 'SC (just kidding). Second, your data are all wrong. I just checked the Census data myself, and here is how Tennessee actually compares both to California and the country as a whole:

% of adults graduated high school: TN=76%, CA=77%, USA=80%
% of adults 4-year college degree: TN=20%, CA=27%, USA=24%

Not much of a difference if you ask me. Finally, is there a better model of a true student-athlete, of a sportsman and citizen in every sense of the word than UT alum Peyton Manning? Any school that produces a person like that is OK in my book.

Go Bears!!
