SF Examiner: This Cal team could be Tedford's best yet

Glenn Dickey

Cal fans will get their first look at what may be Jeff Tedford’s best team yet when the Bears host the Maryland Terrapins at 7 p.m. Saturday at a seriously under construction Memorial Stadium.  The Terrapins embarrassed the Bears last year in Maryland 35-27 in a much more lopsided game than the final score, but Tedford denied that the Bears would be looking for revenge.  “I prefer to say redemption,” he said in his weekly news conference. “We didn’t play very well back there last year, and we want to show what we can really do. It’s really about us.”

The biggest test Saturday will probably be with the offensive line, which is inexperienced and will have to hold up against the blitzes called by new Maryland defensive coordinator Dan Brown, who has completely revamped the Terps’ defensive schemes. Noting that it’s always unsettling to go into a game without having any video to examine, Tedford called it a “huge” challenge for his young offensive line but expressed confidence in their ability to handle it. “Mark Boskovich and Chet Teofilo [starting guards] and Donovan Edwards [backup left tackle] all played quite a lot last year,” Tedford said. (Edwards, in fact, started six games when Teofilo was injured.)
