The Cal football team has a season opener on its home field and a legitimate chance to contend for its conference title, factors that would likely generate excitement within any collegiate program. A lofty preseason ranking and a Heisman Trophy candidate, it seems, would only add to that energy.
But the No. 12 Bears appear eager for an entirely different reason: redemption. Indeed, the buzz among the team heading into tomorrow's 7 p.m. game against Maryland at Memorial Stadium seems to stem from a cache of pent-up feelings that has remained with Cal since its loss to the Terrapins last season-the first setback of a 9-4 campaign. For the Bears, enthusiasm for the commencement of the 2009 season traces back to a day in College Park, Md., that they probably wish they could forget. But they can't.
