Maryland proved that you can be loaded with "skill" players -- speedy receivers and the like -- but it matters little if the line can't block. You need that foundation. Fridge called the O-line "a work in progress." Always hard to get slammed in the opener. This was Maryland's worst opening-game defeat in more than 100 years. There was also a 35-0 loss to Oklahoma in 1967. Fans' expectations are often high in the preseason. And then...this. Anyways, here are some specific notes from the game:
*Chris Turner was manhandled. But he also seemed to more mobile than last season. He took off for eight yards in the first quarter and later ran for a first down. Offensive coordinator James Franklin had been working with him on running when the opportunity presents itself.
* Maryland elected not to have strong-legged Nick Ferrara try a long field with fourth and 8 from the Cal 34 in the first half. But the Terps went for it and converted.
*Nick Ferrara seems like a keeper. He converted his first career field-goal attempts (42, 26 yards).
* Ronnie Tyler has a propensity for acrobatic catches. He made a 17-yard, leaping catch in the second quarter to the Cal 44.
*Turner frequently changed the call at the line. The jacked-up Cal crowd pumped up the volume each time to distract the Maryland quarterback. That was a good crowd that knew its job (distract the opposition) and did it well.
*Both Galt brothers started for Maryland -- Deege on the defensive line and Tommy at tight end.
*Offensive lineman Bruce Campbell has turf toe. How bad would it be for the Terps if the injury lingers? You all know the answer.
