The Oregonian: Kevin Riley is sharp as opening-day QB for Cal

by Mike Tokito

Kevin Riley, the former Beaverton High graduate, shows that Jeff Tedford made the right decision in naming him Cal's starting quarterback as he completes 17 of 24 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-31 win over visiting Michigan State. Writes the SF Chronicles' Ray Ratto:

The signature Riley moment, though, was a 26-yard strike to tight end Cameron Morrah late in the third quarter, while Riley was trying to avoid a sack that would have forced Cal to punt in a 24-21 game. He was supporting two Michigan State pass rushers when he found Morrah open to the right, stayed upright long enough to hit him and extend the drive, turning a deteriorating 3rd-and-13 play into what became the decisive touchdown.

It was the zenith of a 17-for-24 night, in which he threw for two scores, no interceptions and ran the offense with sufficient crispness that he didn't have to do much of the oh-hell-what-do-I-do-now improvisations that marked his high points last year.

Riley gets plenty of help from running back sensation Jahvid Best, whose do-it-all performance includes 111 yards rushing on 24 carries, five receptions for 63 yards and four kickoff returns for 103 yards. The downside for the Golden Bears was that they have trouble putting away the Spartans.
