SF Chronicle: Lynch sits during second half after having ball stripped twice

CAL NOTEBOOK

Bruce Adams, Chronicle Staff Writer

Tailback Marshawn Lynch spent the second half on the bench after fumbling twice in the first half.  Both times the ball was stripped from Lynch as he was being gang tackled at the end of runs.  "We couldn't afford to let that happen again," coach Jeff Tedford. "I don't care who it is."  He said Lynch would be back in the lineup again next Saturday against Washington State.  Tedford said that one of Lynch's strengths -- his ability to stay on his feet after being hit -- also left him vulnerable to having a defender swipe the ball away.  Lynch took it in stride, saying he wouldn't be changing his running style.  He finished the game with 58 yards. Lynch missed two games with a broken finger and was held out the first quarter of last week's loss at UCLA because he missed a running backs' meeting.  Injury toll: Injuries continue to mount for the Bears.  Defensive tackles Brandon Mebane and Abu Ma'afala both left the game with ankle injuries. Mebane didn't return.

Offensive tackle Ryan O'Callaghan, already playing with a broken right wrist, missed most of the game with a concussion incurred from a blow to the back of his head.  Receivers Robert Jordan and DeSean Jackson were both playing hurt by the end of the game. Jackson said he sprained his shoulder, but should be fine. Jordan's collarbone, which he said may include ligament damage, could keep him out next week.  Tedford had no specifics or long term forecasts on any of the injuries, pending further examinations.  Big replay day: Three crucial calls were reversed by replay officials.  In Cal's first touchdown drive in the second quarter, two calls were reversed. Jackson had been ruled out of bounds in catching a nine-yard pass from quarterback Joe Ayoob. The replay official ruled it a catch.  Then on the touchdown, Ayoob had initially been ruled out of bounds at the one on a pass from Lynch. Instead, it was ruled a 21-yard touchdown pass.  In the third quarter half, a seven-yard apparent touchdown run by Oregon State's Yvenson Bernard was instead ruled a touchback, with Cal taking possession at the 20 when the replay showed he had fumbled into the end zone.  Defensive stats: Safety Harrison Smith led Cal with 13 tackles. Linebacker Mickey Pimentel had two interceptions returned for a total of 8 yards -- both coming deep in Cal's territory and stopping Oregon State drives.
