Maurice Drew ran for three touchdowns, scored another on a long punt return, and caught a 28-yard pass for the go-ahead touchdown Saturday night as No. 20 UCLA rallied for a wild 47-40 victory over No. 10 California. Drew caught a swing pass from Drew Olson in the right flat and outran defenders down the sideline to score the decisive touchdown with 1:35 to play. Olson, who had taken the Bruins 75 yards down to the go-ahead score, was sacked on the try for a two-point conversion. UCLA (5-0, 2-0 Pac-10) sealed the win when Trey Brown intercepted a Joe Ayoob pass at the Cal 23 with 1:19 remaining. Drew scored on a 2-yard run as time expired. The loss snapped a 12-game winning streak in the regular season for the Bears (5-1, 2-1). It also cost them their best start in 55 years, dating to when Cal began 9-0 in 1950. Drew finished with 279 total yards — 162 on three punt returns, 65 on 15 carries, and 52 on two receptions.
Olson went 17-of-33 for 225 yards and two touchdowns, and he scored on a quarterback sneak in the fourth quarter. Justin Forsett rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown for Cal, and Marshawn Lynch carried 22 times for 135 yards and also scored a TD. Ayoob completed 18-of-35 for 215 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. DeSean Jackson had 10 catches for 128 yards and one score. The Bears went up 40-28 early in the fourth quarter on Tom Schneider's fourth field goal of the game, a 36-yarder. That was it for Cal, though. Olson marched the Bruins 80 yards on their next series, capping the drive when he bulled in from the 1-yard line midway through the final quarter. UCLA picked up a key first down on that drive when they had fourth-and-2 at their own 42 — Jarrad Page ran for 38 yards on a fake punt. Drew's fifth touchdown — which ties the school record he set last year — was just icing on the cake. The Bruins led only once earlier, when they went up 28-27 on Drew's 81-yard punt return, the third time this year he's returned one for a score. Trailing 27-14, the Bruins closed on Drew's 1-yard run 21 seconds before halftime, capping a 66-yard march that began with 4:07 left in the second quarter. After UCLA came back from an early 14-0 deficit to even it on Drew's 12-yard burst up the middle early in the second quarter, the Bears built their lead back to 27-14 lead on Ayoob's 26-yard touchdown pass to Jackson and Schneider's 27-yard field goal. Drew's 69-yard punt return, when he feinted to his right, then cut to his left behind a wall set up by his teammates, put the ball at the Bears 4 to set up UCLA's first touchdown. Olson rolled to his right and threw to Joe Cowan in the end zone to pull the Bruins within 14-7 with 4:20 remaining in the first half. The Bears were up 14-0 before many of their fans had made it to their seats in the Rose Bowl. On Cal's second play from scrimmage, Forsett burst up the middle, veered to the right sideline and was off on a 57-yard dash down to the UCLA 25. After a reverse to Jackson moved the ball to the 1-yard line, Forsett banged into the end zone to put the Bears on the board 2:15 into the game.
The Jackson carry to the 1 was reviewed, because he appeared to lose control of the ball as he tried to hold it across the goal line and the ball bounced out of bounds in the end zone. But officials said the review was inconclusive, so the play stood. Cal quickly scored again, cashing in when Chris Markey fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the UCLA 15. Ayoob threw a 15-yard scoring pass to tight end Craig Stevens on the next play and the Bears led 14-0 with the game only 2:32 old.
