PASADENA - Cal special-teams coach Pete Alamar was tight-jawed as he left the Rose Bowl on Saturday night, obviously disappointed in his unit's performance in Cal's 47-40 loss to UCLA. Maurice Drew scorched Cal for 162 yards in three punt returns, setting up one touchdown with a 69-yarder and scoring on an 81-yarder. Cal also failed to stop UCLA's fourth-quarter run on a fake punt that led to a touchdown, cutting the Bears' lead to 40-35. ``He is a great player,'' Alamar said of Drew. ``He did a great job. But we didn't get it done. It's my job to make sure we are ready to make the plays, and we didn't.'' Alamar said he instructed David Lonie to punt away from Drew. But, Alamar said, ``you don't always know where the ball is going.'' ``When the ball is in play, you have to make plays,'' he added.
• Bears tailback Marshawn Lynch didn't play in the first quarter because of a disciplinary action. Cal Coach Jeff Tedford said Lynch missed a meeting with the team's medical staff. It didn't hurt the offense. Backup tailback Justin Forsett carried three times for 57 yards in the first quarter, including a 1-yard touchdown run. Lynch finished with 135 yards in 22 carries, and Forsett totaled 153 yards in 10 attempts. Cal rushed for 330 yards.
• Cal freshman DeSean Jackson caught 10 passes for 128 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown from Joe Ayoob in the second quarter. ``It was just one of those days,'' Jackson said. ``It was a tough game from beginning to end. UCLA came up with the great plays. Our linemen were pushing hard the entire game, but we just couldn't come up with the big play.''
• Cal center Marvin Philip missed most of the second quarter because of a bruised rib and was replaced by backup Alex Mack. He re-entered the game in the third quarter.
• UCLA snapped Cal's 12-game, regular-season winning streak, which dated to the Oct. 9, 2004, loss to USC.
• UCLA's 395 yards of total offense was the most allowed by Cal this season.
