The 10th-ranked California Golden Bears will try to build upon an impressive season-opening performance, as they square off against the Eastern Washington Eagles this weekend at Memorial Stadium. Make no mistake about it, Cal sent a message on the opening weekend, as it trounced Maryland 52-13 in Berkeley. The win not only avenged a loss to the Terps in College Park last season, but it also served as notice to the rest of nation that the Bears are contenders for the national title.
"I'm pleased with a lot of things," head coach Jeff Tedford said about his team's performance. "I'm pleased with how the offensive line played. I'm pleased with guys making big plays." Winners of 30 of their last 34 home games, the Bears will now try for their for their third straight 2-0 start under Tedford.
As for the Eagles, they are a highly regarded FCS program that is coming off a 35-14 win over Western Oregon this past weekend. It was a hard fought win, but head coach Beau Baldwin knows this weekend's game is going to be a much tougher task. "It's going to be a huge challenge, but we're excited for it," said Baldwin. "I'm confident that our veterans aren't necessarily going to be in awe by the situation, which is sometimes what you worry about. But as far as the talent level of Cal and the challenge it's going to be, they are the real deal."
