WVLT: Vols Practice Early to Eliminate Saturday's Flaws (Link to Video)

Tennessee's first morning workout of the 2007 preseason camp turned into a lengthy affair, lasting nearly three hours as the Vols worked through various corrections from Saturday's scrimmage.  "It was a good day," head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "We had a little bit of full-speed work with 9-on-8, then went back and had another five-minute period of board drills primarily with the young guys." Fulmer said Sunday's video review of the team's first full scrimmage was about what he expected. "I thought the offensive front did a good job in the scrimmage, the first team. Receivers, the first group kind of did OK, the ones who have been around. The running backs ran hard, although we've got to get Montario (Hardesty) more work. We've also got to find out from those young ones what they really know about pass protection."

Tennessee's first-team running game clicked from the opening bell, turning in a 15-play, 68-yard touchdown drive that garnered everyone's attention. "The defensive front I think got shocked and then it got better from there," Fulmer said. "They certainly will get better if we continue to challenge them. The secondary, they honestly weren't challenged a whole bunch in the scrimmage although they did get their hands on three balls (for interceptions). And we got a good look at a lot of kicking situations so we will see where we go with that." Tuesday's practice schedule marks the first two-a-day slate, with an early-morning workout in addition to the regular afternoon time slot. The Vols also have two practices scheduled for Thursday, with morning workouts on Wednesday and Friday to beat the heat now that the summer semester has ended. "The attitude's good and it's all about attitude," Fulmer said. "They are tired and beat up right now." "There is a group of guys who have played and played well, or have practiced a whole bunch here and they showed up pretty good (Saturday). There is another level of guys who are really talented and certainly capable of helping or even making significant contributions that just need time and the right attitude to push themselves either into a starting role or certainly into a two-deep role."

"Then you've got a small group of guys who just flat don't get it. They don't understand what the tempo of playing in this league is about. That group is small but I would like to push those guys toward helping some way or another."
