AP: Vols TE will miss most of season with injury

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee tight end Brad Cottam will be out for most of his senior season with a left wrist injury, the Volunteers announced Wednesday.  Cottam injured his wrist during Tuesday's team scrimmage and underwent surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center later that night. Tennessee head athletic trainer Jason McVeigh described the surgery as successful.  Tennessee said Cottam was expected to be sidelined until late October or early November. He was expected to be released from the hospital Wednesday.  Cottam, of Germantown, had a career-high 14 receptions last year for 182 yards for an average of 14 yards per catch. His 45-yard reception at Vanderbilt last season was the longest by a Tennessee tight end since Jason Witten ran for 48 yards against Arkansas in 2002.  His absence is bad news for an offense which has already lost its most productive tailback. LaMarcus Coker was suspended indefinitely for a violation the team vaguely described as related to a medical condition.  The Vols also lost backup tight end David Holbert for the season after he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during an Aug. 10 practice.

Senior Chris Brown, who led the tight ends last year with 31 catches for 235 yards, remains to start at one of the two tight end spots. The other position will be filled by either Cottam's younger brother, sophomore Jeff Cottam, or freshman Luke Stocker.  The tight ends are expected to see more passes come their way this season as the corps of inexperienced wide receivers compete for playing time.  A three-time academic All-SEC honoree, Cottam graduated last spring with a degree in business studies and has begun work on a master's degree in sport studies.

You do know that Tennessee leads the series against Florida 19-17 and that we only lost to the National Champion Gators by 1 point last year. Right?
