Aug. 10, 2005
BERKELEY - The University of California Athletic Department and ISP Sports, the exclusive multimedia rights holder for Cal Athletics, announced today a five-year agreement with Comcast SportsNet that includes broadcast rights to regular season game coverage for the school's varsity sports programs, as well as marketing and sponsorship opportunities.
The joint announcement was made by Sandy Barbour, Athletic Director at Cal, and Larry Eldridge, Vice President and General Manager of Comcast SportsNet West.
"Cal athletics provides us with compelling content to offer our viewers throughout the region," said Eldridge. "This new relationship with Cal is a dynamic development for Comcast SportsNet as we continue to establish our new network as a vibrant presence in the area's sports landscape. We're excited about the partnership and its benefits to all parties involved."
The agreement, which was negotiated by Comcast SportsNet and ISP Sports and runs from the fall of 2005 through 2010, calls for a minimum of 12 Golden Bear sports events to be televised live on an annual basis. Comcast SportsNet plans to carry six men's basketball games, up to two football games and a schedule of other sports contests - such as women's basketball, volleyball, softball and baseball - as part of its yearly schedule.
The first Cal event to appear on Comcast SportsNet as part of the new contract will be the Cal-Sacramento State football game that kicks off at 2 p.m. Sept. 3 in Memorial Stadium.
Comcast SportsNet also will air a weekly football show with Coach Jeff Tedford and a weekly basketball show with Coach Ben Braun during the appropriate seasons.
"We are extremely pleased to be entering into this partnership," said Barbour. "As it has done in many other Top 20 markets, Comcast SportsNet is rapidly establishing a sports presence in the Bay Area and Northern California. We believe this partnership will enhance the growth of - and play an important role in promoting - both parties. In addition, Comcast SportsNet brings some unique marketing opportunities to us, and we're excited about our new ability to reach out to Cal alums, as well as general sports fans, in greater Northern California and beyond. We look forward to growing with Comcast SportsNet in this venture."
Comcast SportsNet currently reaches approximately 2.3 million cable and satellite customers in Northern California and western Nevada. Channel locations can be found at www.comcastsportsnet.com. Digital subscribers in the San Francisco Bay Area receive Comcast SportsNet on channel 400, and the network appears on channel 656 on DirecTV and channel 409 on the Dish Network.
With the agreement, Comcast SportsNet also becomes an official sponsor of Cal athletics and receives venue signage, broadcast advertising inventory and other promotional opportunities through Golden Bears athletics.
Comcast SportsNet currently consists of regional sports networks servicing the Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, Chicago, and Northern and Central California television markets. Together, the networks currently reach over 14 million households and provide game coverage for the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, and Chicago Blackhawks; the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, Washington Wizards, Chicago Bulls, and Sacramento Kings; and MLB's Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs, and Chicago White Sox.
