Modesto Bee: Sixth-year receiver helped Cal escape

Link.

It took Sean Young six years to finally make an impact.  Cal's wide receiver, who redshirted his first season and was granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA in the offseason, made his first career start Saturday night and had four catches for 81 yards to help the Bears beat Michigan State 38-31 in their season opener at Memorial Stadium.  "I told him during pregame at stretch that this is what he's been waiting for for six years," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. "He had a great camp. It's nice to see him contribute to the team."

A series of injuries led to Young amassing just three career catches coming into the season. Young was the Bears' most consistent receiver during training camp and simply continued that production Saturday night.  "The opportunity came, and I took advantage of it," Young said. "It feels good to contribute. I wasn't nervous at all. I felt comfortable out there."  Three of Young's four catches went for at least 10 yards. His 24-yard catch helped set up a Jahvid Best's touchdown run, and a 42-yard grab set up a Cameron Morrah touchdown catch from quarterback Kevin Riley.
