EAST LANSING -- With two-a-day practices nearly completed, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio is eager to game plan for California. The Spartans continued Wednesday to meet specific objectives, especially within the depth chart, ahead of the Aug. 30 opener against the Golden Bears. "I like my team," Dantonio said before the team's morning practice. "But I think there's always room for improvement." Team captains are expected to be named Wednesday night, before full-time preparation begins for Cal. Dantonio believes the change of focus toward a real opponent will break the monotonous nature of camp. "Fall camp, it becomes so routine that you don't know which day it is," Dantonio said. "I think we can at least change our focus a bit to somebody else, and that will provide a little more excitement around here." Two buzz words surrounding camp in Dantonio's second season are "competiton" and "depth."
Dantonio points to the No. 2 running back spot as one of the toughest positions to call heading into the season. A.J. Jimmerson, Ashton Leggett and Andre Anderson all remain in the running to be Javon Ringer's backup. "They each add a little bit of a different dimension," Dantonio said. On defense, Dantonio said the linebacker positions continue to be evaluated. Greg Jones could remain inside or move outside.
