Chicago Tribune: Zook: Bryant not reaching potential

By Neil Milbert

Tribune staff reporter

CHAMPAIGN -- Melvin Bryant played the best game of his career at Illinois when he caught four passes for 52 yards—both career highs—in the 40-19 rout of San Jose State. But coach Ron Zook says the junior tight end can do better.  "If Melvin gets his motor running, this is an offense where he can become a big, big factor," Zook said.  "He's a great blocker; he can catch the football. The thing Melvin is beginning to understand is that you can't just wake up Saturday morning and flick on the switch. Sometimes during practice he acts like he doesn't enjoy the game of football." In Zook's opinion, the Illini "made an awful lot of improvement on defense," in the lopsided San Jose State game that followed a come-from-behind 33-30 overtime victory over Rutgers. "A lot of times we had four, five, six, seven, eight, nine guys at the ball," he said. Next: Saturday at California, 4 p.m.
