Arizona Republic: ASU rewind: Sun Devils fall at Cal

Link.

Excerpt:

Taking another look at Saturday's ASU-Cal game.

What we learned

There's a lot of fight left in the Sun Devils in spite of three consecutive losses. They outscored Cal 14-7 over the final 2 1/2 quarters and held the Bears to 67 yards total offense in the second half.

• The run game is not dead although 71 yards is nothing to crow about. The issue now is how to sustain progress against Southern California, with the nation's 12th best rush defense.

Pleasant surprises

True freshman DT Lawrence Guy played well in his first start even though his tackles for loss were less than originally credited due to a computer error. Still the Sun Devils finished with six tackles for loss after recording 22 in the first four games.

• Thomas Weber successfully handling seven punts with a splint on his left hand and averaging 43.3 yards, better than his season average (42.3) coming in.

• Outgaining Cal 137-77 in kick-return yardage although the Bears were without Jahvid Best, seventh nationally on kickoff returns. Kyle Williams jumps to 23rd nationally on punt returns.
