KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Erik Ainge said Tennessee will have to learn more from their mistakes than achievements in the team's first fall scrimmage. "Lot of mistakes, lot of good plays on both sides of the ball," the quarterback said. "First scrimmages are always rough on both sides. Defense makes mistakes, offense makes mistakes. Practice Monday through Friday and how we come out in the second scrimmage will tell us where we're at." Tennessee went with a no huddle offense in all the sets, giving the upper hand to the offense in a fair majority of the scrimmage. "I think the benefits of the no huddle showed today," Ainge said. "Getting on the ball and on the right running plays allows coach (David) Cutcliffe to see what they're doing on defense." Tailback Arian Foster ran for 47 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries with the first team, and Montario Hardesty, who had 14 yards on five attempts, ran a few plays with the first and second rotations.
Freshmen Lennon Creer and Daryl Vereen split most of the snaps throughout the day, giving the coaches a glimpse at who might be able to fill in for the suspended LaMarcus Coker. "I thought both the running backs hit it really hard," coach Phillip Fulmer said. "That's what we wanted to see. Both of them had some nice runs and showed that they have speed." Creer tallied 84 yards on 11 carries, while Vereen totaled 41 yards on 13 rushes. While there were no injuries in the scrimmage, Fulmer said senior tight end David Holbert, who was carted off at the end of practice Friday, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will be out for the season. Holbert was behind senior tight ends Chris Brown and Brad Cottam on the depth chart and was mentioned as a possibility in the backfield. Holbert has a red shirt year left -- an option the coaching staff toyed with before the injury because of the trio of seniors -- and Fulmer said Holbert should, with hard work, be beneficial for the team next year.
