Wall Street Journal: Cal Players Wear Same Numbers

The WSJ Daily Fix column had the following note:

Quick, college-football fans: Who wears No. 10 for Cal? If you said "middle linebacker Desmond Bishop," you're right. If you said "running back Marshawn Lynch," you're right too. In the Contra Costa Times, Joe Stiglich looks at the NCAA's odd rule allowing teammates to wear the same number as long as they're not part of the same play.  "The numbers game will be in full effect during Saturday's Big Game between Cal and Stanford at Memorial Stadium," Mr. Stiglich warns. "The NCAA allows players to wear Nos. 1-99, and the Bears double up on 30 of those, even though 16 available numbers go unused. … Adding to the confusion is that many of the Bears wearing duplicate numbers are impact players sure to surface frequently on the stat sheet -- Lynch and Bishop come to mind, as do receiver DeSean Jackson and outside linebacker Worrell Williams, who both wear No. 1. The Cardinal counters with just eight uniform clones."
