SF Chronicle: Big Game Flashback

Chuck Muncie, Cal, 1975

Muncie finished second in the 1975 Heisman Trophy voting to Archie Griffin and was the No. 3 overall pick in the 1976 NFL draft. One of the few football players to wear glasses when he played, Muncie led a powerful Cal team that finished tied for the Pac-8 conference championship in 1975, the last time the Bears finished first. UCLA went to the Rose Bowl because it beat USC six days after the Big Game, but the other bowls refused to wait until after the UCLA-USC game to fill their slots, leaving the Bears without a postseason game.

Muncie was hoping to play in the Rose Bowl after the 1975 Big Game, but the game against Stanford turned out to be his final collegiate competition. He made it one to remember, running for three touchdowns, catching a touchdown pass for a fourth score and throwing a touchdown pass in the Bears' 48-15 win. He collected 127 of his 169 rushing yards in the first half. The 1975 Big Game is often called The Chuck Muncie Game.
