SF Examiner: Cal receivers are feeling a Daft - Kevin Daft

Rob Calogne

Last season Cal receivers caught 113 passes for 1,606 yards and 12 touchdowns.  The passing offense as a whole ranked 83rd nationally, mainly due to the efforts of Jahvid Best, Cameron Morrah, and Shane Vereen, who combined for 81 more receptions.  The receiver's totals averaged over the 13 games they played came to 8.7 receptions, 123.54 yards, and .92 touchdowns per game.  Cal receivers caught 10 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns in the 52-13 victory over Maryland Saturday night.

To give that a little perspective, there were only 27 pass attempts and 17 receptions on the night--meaning that receivers had a much greater ratio of passes caught than last season.  Laying those stats out over a 13 game schedule, (including a bowl game), These receivers are already on pace to catch 130 passes for 2,795 yards, and score 26 touchdowns.

That's from a game where Cal attempted only eight passes in the second half!  Even though it's just one game, Cal's 21st ranking in passing offense is a major improvement over last season...for now.  It is just one game, so we'll temper our praise for now, but it's looking good.
