San Jose Mercury: Bay Area Teams Don't Exactly Travel Well

Link.

Excerpt:

Cal

Result: Lost at Maryland 35-27

Grade: F

Comment: The Bears said the 9 a.m. kickoff wasn't the problem, but that the humidity hit them like a soaked jersey. "A lot of guys weren't expecting this weather," quarterback Kevin Riley said.  Isn't that one more reason to travel Thursday instead of Friday, to adjust to the weather?  Everything about Cal's performance reeked of overconfidence: Coming off a 63-point win, ranked in the top-25, unencumbered by tree sitters, all the publicity for Jahvid Best, facing a team that just lost to Middle Tennessee State — the Bears figured they would roll. Instead, they were outcoached and outplayed. But Cal picked the right time for a stinker: It's far better to lose outside than inside the conference, especially when you have a bye week coming to fix the problems.

Next up for Cal: Bye, then Colorado State

Early line: N/A

The matchup: The well-timed break gives the Bears a chance to step back, regain their focus and correct flaws in their execution. (Hello, offensive line.)  Colorado State, which barely beat Sacramento State, will be Cal's final chance to smooth the glitches before it enters the heart of conference play against Arizona State.
