California: Cal has an excellent crop of incoming freshmen. While unable to nab any five-star recruits, the Bears were able to land seven four-star recruits. On the defensive side of the ball, CB Darian Hagan, DT Derrick Hill and DT Mike Costanzo lead the way. Costanzo is big (6’2”, 296 lbs.), strong and intense. His athleticism (5.62 40 yard) needs improvement. Hill and Hagan are more polished athletes and may contribute early in their collegiate careers.
Offensively, the Bears signed running backs James Montgomery and Tracy Slocum, JC OL Mike Gibson and QB Kevin Riley. Slocum is a solid back who doesn’t possess breakaway speed (4.65 in the 40), but he’s quick through the hole and understands the game. Montgomery is quicker (4.40 in the 40) than Slocum, but doesn’t possess the instincts of his counterpart. With Cal losing some of the offensive line, junior college transfer Mike Gibson is expected to compete immediately for playing time. At 6’5, 305 lbs. he certainly possesses the size to step in and contribute. Kevin Riley has a strong and accurate arm, but it’s unlikely he’ll see any playing time as a true freshman.
