“The conference's biggest opening-day bust was Cal quarterback Joe Ayoob, who came on in relief of injured starter Nate Longshore and threw 10 consecutive incompletions. Most of his pass attempts weren't close. Ayoob, California's JC player of the year last season, was expected to be coach Jeff Tedford's next great quarterback. Now? With Longshore gone, probably for the season with a broken leg, Tedford has three options for this week's game against Washington: Ayoob, junior Steve Levy, a fullback last season, or freshman Kyle Reed. . . .”
