Cal at New Mexico State Game Notes

Sept. 25, 2005

Forsett Makes History: Justin Forsett's 235 yards against New Mexico State is the fourth-best single-game rushing performance in Cal history. It is the 16th consecutive game that Cal has posted a 100-yard rusher. Just twice in 2004 did Cal have a 200-yard rusher. J.J. Arrington ran for 261 yards against Southern Miss and 205 against UCLA.  Piling it on: Justin Forsett ran for over 200 yards in the span of two quarters - the first quarter against New Mexico State and the fourth against Illinois in Week 3. Forsett racked up 113 yards on his first 11 carries in Cal's first quarter against New Mexico State. The sophomore tailback picked up 88 yards in the Bears' fourth quarter against Illinois.

Freshman Phenom: DeSean Jackson had a career game against New Mexico State. His nine catches for 130 yards are the most by a freshman receiver. He had a career-long reception of 41 yards to put Cal up 13-3 in the first quarter. Coming into the New Mexico State game, Jackson had 3 catches for 58 yards. In Week 1 vs. Sacramento State, Jackson had two catches for 58 yards, including a 31-yard TD reception. Against Illinois, Jackson finished 1-21. Against Washington, Jackson did not record a catch.  Keep on Blocking: Thomas DeCoud's blocked field goal in the second quarter is Cal's second blocked kick this season. Against Sacramento State, Justin Moye blocked a punt in the fourth quarter.

Picking Off: Daymeion Hughes intercepted a Joey Vincent pass and returned it for 59 yards. Hughes' interception was his second of the season. He returned a pick against Washington for a 41-yard TD. Tim Mixon picked up Cal's second interception of the game to open the second half. It is the third INT for the Bears in 2005.

Defensive Stand: Though New Mexico State put up 13 points against Cal, the Bears did not give up an offensive touchdown. The Aggies scored their lone TD on a kickoff return. New Mexico State also kicked two field goals.

On the Ground: Joe Ayoob scored three times on the ground for Cal, marking his first and second and third rushing TDs of his career.

Going Long: Chris Manderino's 54-yard catch is a career-long for the senior fullback. His previous career-long was a 36-yard reception in 2004 against Oregon.

Steady Schneider: Despite the block of Tom Schneider's PAT on Cal's first touchdown, the sophomore kicker is still 23-24 for the season on PATs and 97-99 extending back to the beginning of the 2004 season. His only miss in 2004 came against New Mexico State in the second game of the season.

Bear Bits: The last time Cal gave up 100 yards to a single rusher was against Arizona State when Hakim Hill ran for 104 yards on Oct. 30, 2004. ... The Bears were averaging 81.7 yards per game going into the New Mexico State contest. In 2004, Cal averaged 82.5 yards per game. ... Chris Williams of New Mexico State returned a kickoff 94 yards in the first quarter to bring the score to 13-10. It was the first time an opponent had returned a kickoff for a TD since Brian Singleton of Arizona State returned a kickoff for 85 yards in 1995.
