Moments after junior quarterback Steve Levy entered the Memorial Stadium locker room following Cal's 41-3 victory over Sacramento State, his phone started to buzz.
``It was Aaron Rodgers,'' said Levy, who connected with wide receiver Noah Smith on a 49-yard touchdown pass. ``He sent me a text message. We have become such good friends.'' Rodgers, now with the Green Bay Packers, might want to give Levy some advice about being a starter. Cal Coach Jeff Tedford said he would decide between Levy and Joe Ayoob on Monday now that Nate Longshore is out because of a broken fibula in his left leg. In his first three seasons at Cal, Levy hadn't received congratulations from anyone, at least for anything accomplished on the football field. He spent two seasons as a backup quarterback and then tried fullback last year.
``Playing fullback was my decision,'' Levy said. ``I was trying to find a way to get on the field faster. But it was a wrong decision on my part.'' Levy returned to quarterback in spring ball, and then had his best camp ever throwing the football in August.
• Although Cal's defense had seven new starters, it held the Hornets to 68 rushing yards and 189 yards overall. ``For the most part the defense was solid,'' Cal Coach Jeff Tedford said. ``But we could tackle better. We had some guys for losses and they broke out.''
Leading the defensive effort was linebacker Desmond Bishop, a junior college transfer who had seven tackles. Freshman linebacker Zack Follett had four tackles, including one for loss. Sacramento State's top offensive threat was wide receiver Ryan Coogler, who caught five passes for 46 yards.
• Sophomore kicker Tom Schneider showed off his new-found leg strength by drilling a 49-yard field goal in the second quarter.
``That was a good kick,'' Tedford said. ``It just shows how much he has improved.''
Schneider also made a 27-yard attempt in the third quarter.
