Steve Levy, Calfornia's starting quarterback? Levy, a Cornwall resident, could be the man under center when California plays at Washington in a Pac-10 game Saturday. Levy went from signaling in plays as Cal's No. 3 quarterback to throwing his first college touchdown last Saturday against Sacramento State. Nate Longshore, Cal's starter, suffered a broken ankle in the second quarter. Joe Ayoob, a junior, replaced Longshore and was ineffective, missing on all 10 of his passes.
Levy, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound junior, connected with Nate Smith on a 46-yard third-quarter touchdown and played Cal's last seven series. Cal coach Jeff Tedford said that he would decide on a starter today. In a postgame press conference, Tedford made positive comments about Levy's performance. "I thought he did fairly well," Tedford said after Levy's performance. "He really didn't take any reps this last week. ... He is a competitive guy and I think if he can get some reps in practice he will be fine for the games." Levy went 2-for-7 for 52 yards. Levy threw an interception on his first attempt. "It's been a long time coming," said Levy after the Sacramento State game. "I am fortunate."
Tedford recruited Levy as a quarterback out of Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, N.J., in 2002. Levy redshirted and sat behind Kyle Boller, now the quarterback for Baltimore Ravens, his freshman season. Levy moved to fullback last season while Aaron Rodgers, now with the Green Bay Packers, led Cal to a 10-2 record.
Levy said last week that, "This is the best that I've ever thrown. I am getting down the offense. This is where I wanted to be all along. I'm definitely happy. I didn't like fullback at all."
