DATELINE: On the trainer's table. If Cal had lost two offensive linemen in the Sacramento State game, I'd be concerned. Donnie McCleskey ... big trouble. Heck, even had Chris Manderino gone down, the Bears could have been headed down a slippery slope toward the Emerald Bowl. But a quarterback? Any quarterback? No sweat. Jeff Tedford can take a backup fullback, put him behind center and have him throwing touchdown passes in about 20 minutes. You'll see a whole new Joe Ayoob when the Bears visit Washington on Saturday. A week under Jeff Tedford's private tutelage assures that. Losing Nate Longshore in the opener is a tough break. But it could have been worse. Losing David Lonie would have been a killer.
