From Cal's website: California will open the 2009 season at home against Maryland Sept. 5 and will play a total of six games in Memorial Stadium in the final football schedule announced by the Pacific-10 Conference. The revised slate includes two bye weeks, which were created when the Golden Bears' road date with Washington, initially set for Oct. 10, was moved to Dec. 5. The original schedule called for 12 games over 12 consecutive weekends.

Cal's schedule features six contests against teams that played in a bowl game this past year, non-conference opponents Maryland (Humanitarian) and Minnesota (Insight) plus Pac-10 foes USC (Rose), Arizona (Las Vegas), Oregon (Holiday) and Oregon State (Sun).

After playing Maryland Sept. 5, the Bears remain home the following Saturday when they host Eastern Washington Sept. 12. The remaining home dates are against USC Oct. 3, Washington State Oct. 24, Oregon State Nov. 7 and Arizona Nov. 14.

Cal's first road trip of the year is to Minnesota Sept. 19 with a visit to Oregon a week later. Other road games are at UCLA Oct. 17, Arizona State Oct. 31, Stanford Nov. 21 and Washington Dec. 5.

The Pac-10 also announced that the Cal-Oregon game in Eugene will be televised by ABC, ESPN or ESPN2, although a time has not been determined. No game times or other television broadcast arrangements have been decided.

The Bears are coming off a 9-4 campaign this past fall, capped by a 24-17 victory over Miami in the Emerald Bowl. The result earned Cal a No. 25 ranking in the final USA Today coaches poll, the fourth time in the last five years the Bears have been ranked at the end of the year.

Wow, meat of schedule comes early, eh? Suspect we'll be good at payback when Maryland comes to town (less daunting than Tenessee) but lordy our Pac-10 schedule gets nasty quick. AT least we have USC at home.

Any insights into when the other game will be added? Looks like our onluy bye is in Week 2, which makes the Maryland game seem like pre-season. Hope we can fit that extra game in August to give our guys a few more snaps.

Thanks for the preview!

Ending the season with a axe-maintaining beatdown on the farm is the way to go, but we've got to fit that extra game in there somewhere.

Would prefer a cupcake if its early, or a home game either way.

The 12th game is against Eastern Washington in Berkeley, in will played in the middle of the season.

Kentucky has an open date Sept 12th, same as Cal. There is no date in the middle of the season for Eastern Washington.

If any of you have been following Cal long enough, you would know by now we always get USC at home in odd numbered years and Stanford on the road as well. Some of these comments are very revealing in their ... well... childishness???

Also, no more bye weeks please!!! Keep it hard core, keep it real. This is football, and to quote Dana Carvey, "in the good ol days, we didn't have these BYE weeks, the only thing that went BYE was our honey! WE told them on Labor Day if you wanted someone to screw in the afternoon go over to Sandy Barbour and we LIKED IT, all happy day..."

Can't wait to see Cal stick it to Maryland. The meat of the schedule is early on, but with what I feel is the best running back tandom in the Pac 10 with Best and Vereen, and Riley getting a year of experience under his belt they will come out strong and 9-10 wins is very attainable for this team. Lost a few key players on defense such as Follet, and D.J, but the majority of the defense is returning and will be solid with Thompson leading the way.

Cals running backs are clearly the best in the conference, but a close second will be the 3 backs from USC. And running behind the offensive line they will be sporting this year is what will make them once again Pac10 champions.
