BERKELEY - An activist cited by authorities and told to stay off the UC Berkeley campus or face arrest has reportedly returned to a redwood tree he occupied for several days last month. Zachary Running Wolf, a former Berkeley mayoral candidate, climbed into the tree in an oak grove in front of Memorial Stadium late Sunday night, a press release said. People have been staying in the trees to halt plans to build a $112 million sports training complex along Memorial Stadium's western wall, which would result in uprooting the grove. Police removed all of Running Wolf's belongings from that tree Dec. 14, 2006, a day after he was cited and escorted off campus without incident, according to UC Berkeley Assistant Police Chief Mitch Celaya. Running Wolf had climbed down from the tree to promote a festival supporting the tree-sit. Celaya had said Running Wolf would face misdemeanor charges if he returns to the UC Berkeley campus. The original tree-sit began Dec. 2, with Running Wolf, along with Jess Walsh and Aaron Diek, vowing to stay in the trees until the university agreed to save the 200-year-old Heritage Oak and 42 mature live oaks.
