ANG Newspapers: Jahvid Best might be Cal's best bet yet

By Bob Fitzgerald

PETE CARROLL'S PROGRAM remains two touchdowns better than any in the West, so he really doesn't have to care, but you can bet every other Pac-10 football coach took notice of the 100-meter sprint champion at the state high school finals Saturday.  Here's hoping Cal's Jeff Tedford headed that list.   Given the recent success of the program, it would be no surprise if the Bears featured the best running back in the conference next season, even after Marshawn Lynch bolted to the NFL. And I'm not talking about Justin Forsett.   If you've seen Salesian High's Jahvid Best run with a football, you've had to wonder how the small-school star would fare against the highest level of competition in the college game.

Bears fans who watched him dust the state's sprint heavyweights Saturday in record-breaking fashion and lay claim to California's fastest prep honors no longer have any doubts. This uniquely talented kid should be considered a Heisman Trophy candidate as a freshman.  Yeah, I know Tedford's history of being overly loyal to imcumbants and being harder on rookies than Don Nelson. But this blur has to be an exception.  If Best doesn't get at least 15 touches in the Sept. 1 opener against Tennessee, Tedford's making a huge mistake — one the Bears probably wouldn't be able to overcome against a quality opponent such as the Volunteers.   Congratulations, Jahvid. Here's hoping you take the opening kickoff of the 2007 season 100 yards in about

.

Reading Fitzgerald's article: 'Jahvid Best might be Cal's best bet yet' and I hardly got past the first line before I found myself choking and gagging! "Pete Carroll's Program remains two tds better than any in the West???" Since when? Was I just imagining those two losses to Pac-10 teams last year? Was I imagining those close -- I'm talking CLOSE games against a few other Pac-10 teams, as well? You $C ass-kissers have GOT to lighten up! It wasn't that long ago when UCLA beat the condoms EIGHHT YEARS IN A ROW! They're riding a wave right now. IT WONT LAST! That wave's about to hit the shore and get broken up by a huge Golden Bear! All the Assee hype is getting tiresome and downright ridiculous. Cal, UCLA, Wash. St, Washington and the Oregon teams are on their way UP. Assee is goin' DOWN. And all the hype, cheating and big money in the world isn't going to stop it from happening!

Actually the comment i gagged at the most was the, "If Best doesn't get at least 15 touches in the Sept. 1 opener against Tennessee, Tedford's making a huge mistake — one the Bears probably wouldn't be able to overcome against a quality opponent such as the Volunteers." It makes it sound like we are just lucky to be on the same field as the Volunteers. Lynch was a great player but not the only playmaker Cal had last year. If NOT inserting Best as a starter means the Bears can't beat 'quality opponents,' we will certainly lose to Tennessee, Oregon, UCLA, Oregon State, and USC. We would probably split with ASU, Arizona, Washington and WSU, and likely beat Colorado St, Louisiana Tech, and Stanford. By Fitzgerald's logic, without Best, we are maybe a 6-6 team. I guess it's a little slow this time of the year and sportswriters will write anything to try and stir up some conversation.
