Oakland Tribune: Assistant Gregory to stay at Cal

Defensive coordinator turns down lucrative job at Colorado

BERKELEY — Bob Gregory would have become much wealthier, while finding housing far more affordable, if he had left Cal for Colorado.  But the Bears defensive coordinator rejected a similar position at Colorado, even though he would have earned a reported $200,000 in Boulder, nearly twice what he makes in Berkeley.  "It always comes down to your family," Gregory said Friday. "We want to stay here. We like it here. We have two little guys, 4 and 1. The 4-year-old is in a very good school.  "I don't necessarily think bigger is better. Better is better. I've been asked about head-coaching jobs the last two years."  He could receive similar offers without making a lateral move.  "I didn't want to leave coach (Jeff) Tedford," Gregory said. "I feel great loyalty to Jeff, and tremendous respect. And we have a chance to be real good next year."

Loyalty and family aside, was it hard for Gregory and his wife, Molly, to turn down a more lucrative financial situation? "Very hard," he said. "That was a factor. We could have gotten a pretty nice house. We have a small house in Lafayette. But all that stuff works out in the end."

Gregory is close friends with new Colorado coach Dan Hawkins from their having coached together at Willamette and Boise State. Hawkins took Gregory's decision well, telling him that he had made the right choice. "He's an awesome guy," Gregory said, "but I've been in the Pac-10 a long time, and a West Coast guy all my life. The first thing is family, and we like where we're at." Gregory was Hawkins' first choice as defensive coordinator. Hawkins then named Boise State assistant Ron Collins to the position.
